# How much progress should my student make in the curriculum?

#### **How much progress should my students make in the curriculum?**

Students can use a time planner to track their expected progress on any given week. You can use this tool to estimate their progress as well. However, some students may move more quickly or more slowly than the estimates below. The courses are all self-paced, so they don't need to adhere strictly to the study plans and can create custom plans either by themselves or with the help of their student advisor who still aligns with their overall course completion goal of 6 or 9 months.

Please find the links to the study plans below:

#### **How can I support students with slow progress?**

If you notice your mentee is making slow progress, please use this call script as a guide.

**1. Start with Identifying Areas of Completion**

“Let’s celebrate what you have already accomplished so far”. Recognize what they have done so far to boost motivation.

**2. Ask About their Schedule for Learning Time**

“What is your study plan? When do you hope to finish? How many hours are you able to dedicate each week to complete the course?”  Evaluate if their learning time is realistic or you can challenge the mentee to aim for more.

**3. Identify the Cause of Slow Progress**

“I noticed since our last call that progress has been slow. As your accountability partner, I’m here to help you pace your learning going forward. What are some of your setbacks preventing you from moving forward in the course? How can I help you progress faster or at your ideal pace?”

**4. Break It Down**

Discuss taking smaller steps if a student has slow progress due to a lack in understanding the material.

“What can you complete by our next call?” Make sure it’s an attainable goal. Be mindful of how your mentee is feeling. They may feel embarrassed about their slow progress. Communicate that it’s okay to slow down to fully digest the material. “No progress is too small, progress is better than no progress”.  Take time in your call to explain the curriculum, model examples if needed, review previous material for added support. Ask, “is there any part of the course that you’d like me to explain or dive deeper in?”

- *Optional:* “If you feel stuck you can email me instead of waiting for the next call”.
- *Optional:* Suggest the student schedule an On Demand Mentor Call to dive deeper into certain concepts or areas of the curriculum.

**5. Further Motivating a Mentee with a Challenge**

On the other hand, if you believe your mentee comprehends the material well you can motivate them by adding a challenge.

“What you have completed so far shows excellent comprehension of the course material. I challenge you to take it a step further and try to complete X by the time of our next call”.

**6. Ask How You Can Help**

Now that you have given your advice, ask the mentee how they think you can be most helpful with their slow progress. “What can I do more of to support you? What can I do less of or stop doing? What can I start doing to support you better?” (Mentees don’t have to have an answer right away. It can take them some time to understand how they need support. If they need time, you can follow up on the next call about it).

- *Optional:* Help them organize their time. Discuss their routine and find blocks of time to reserve for coursework.

**7. Wrap-Up and Next Steps**

Finish the call by summarizing 1) what was identified as the reason for slow progress, and 2) what the mentee is going to do to move forward (hold them accountable to this!).

- *Recommendation*: Review the study place or pacing guide together and discuss solutions to catch up. You’re not alone in supporting your student, either--you can flag student progress or motivation concerns to the Mentor team at [mentormanager@springboard.com](mailto:mentormanager@springboard.com). The student advisor can set up calls with your mentee and/or make a completion plan tailored to your student’s needs.
- *Optional*: Mid-week check-in email. Send your mentee an email for a mid-week check-in. The email should have two parts: “what have you done so far and what do you plan to do by our next call?” Or  you can hold your mentees accountable by requesting them to send you a mid-week email. Template:

#### **How can I get more support if my mentees are struggling?**

If your students are struggling with progress, motivation or other issues, you can help by letting us know:

- Encourage your students to reach out to their Student Advisor via email at [advising@springboard.com](mailto:advising@springboard.com). Our goal is to ensure they feel supported and welcomed. Their Student Advisor does their best to respond to emails within 24 hours. They are also available to schedule advising calls with mentees.
- Flag your concern directly to the Mentor team by:
    - Rate your call with a 3 or lower call rating and share details in the call notes. A low call rating sends an automated email to our team. We may follow-up with you for further discussion.
    - Or email [mentormanager@springboard.com](mailto:mentormanager@springboard.com) directly with your feedback and suggestions.
    - We will inform the Student Advisor and will work together to find the best support to keep your students on track.
